Steps in the Dual Enrollment Process

  1. Dual enrolled classes are classes that students take at Northumberland High School and receive credit at both Northumberland High School and at Rappahannock Community College at the same time. If you are interested in taking dual enrollment classes at NHS, you will need to complete some steps in order to be ready to take the dual enrollment class. Courses that are offered for dual enrollment at NHS in the 2015-2016 school year are as follows: DE Pre-calculus, DE Calculus, DE English 12, Teacher Cadet I, Teacher Cadet II, DE US History,  Computer Applications, Web Design, Computer Information Systems, Introduction to Engineering, Principles of Engineering, Business Management, Business Law, Economics & Personal Finance, Advanced First Aid & CPR, EMT I, and EMTII. You should assume that if you requested one of these dual enrolled courses, you will be in that course.

Note: We realize that you have not seen your schedule yet. We are asking you to come and take the placement test if you are interested in dual enrollment opportunities. Even if you chose not to take a dual enrollment class this year, you may at some time in the future. With very limited exceptions, course requests were honored as requested.

  1. Apply to Rappahannock Community College (RCC) at home, before you come Northumberland High School to take the Virginia Placement Test (VPT). The RCC website is www.rappahannock.edu. From the RCC homepage, click the big yellow apply button. Follow the instructions to complete the RCC application online. You do not need to request high school transcripts. At the end of the (very short) college application you will be given an EMPL number, also called your student id number. You will need to bring this number with you when you take the Virginia Placement Test.

  1. Look at the information below and decide if you need to take the Virginia Placement Test. If you have taken the PSAT, SAT, ACT or passed your Algebra I SOL and have met the required scores below, you may not need to take certain parts or any of the Virginia Placement Test. There are different criteria you must meet for transfer (math, English, history) dual enrolled courses and for CTE courses (all others). For example, if you passed the Algebra I SOL, you will not need to take the math part of the VPT. However, if you don’t have the required score on the PSAT, SAT or ACT, then you would still need to take the English part of the VPT. If you have none of the qualifying scores listed below for either part of the placement test, then you need to take both the math and English VPT.

  1. If you need to take the Virginia Placement Test, you have several options. Northumberland High School will be offering the VPT on Thursday, August 20th beginning at 9 am in the high school library. You are also welcome to test at one of the Rappahannock Community College Campuses listed below. If you need to take the whole VPT, you should plan at least a 3 to 4 hour block of time to take the test. We will also offer an opportunity to test during one of the first 2 weeks of school for students who were unable to take the test during the summer.
